Step 1. Prepare
Preparation is key to relaxing and enjoying the time spent caring for yourself. Make sure to have the items you need to pamper yourself on hand in advance. Here is a list of things I use to create my ultimate at-home self-care spa experience.
- Fluffy towel
- Cozy bathrobe
- Candles, incense or Essential Oil diffuser
- Olive oil or hair treatment mask
- Epsom Salts, baking soda and Essential Oils
- Manicure/Pedicure Supplies and Polish
- Micro needling pen or Derma Roller
- Skin Serums
- Face Mask
- Red Light
Step 2. Apply hair treatment
I have dry hair from years of getting highlights and bleaching, so I love replenishing its moisture by applying olive oil. I learned this tip from a friend 23 years ago who had long hair like Crystal Gayle (IYKYK). Once per month, she would apply olive oil to her hair and cover it with a bag overnight. Her hair was beautiful and always looked healthy!
I’ve been doing this treatment a few times per year since she told me about it. Sometimes I do an overnight treatment, other times I let the oil soak in for only a few hours. An at-home spa day is the perfect time to do this hair treatment. That said, you may purchase a hair mask that works for you if you have oily hair. Be sure to pull up your hair and cover it with a towel or plastic bag to avoid getting the oil on your clothes or furniture.

Step 3. Create a spa-like atmosphere
A tranquil environment will set the tone for your spa experience. If you’re like me and unable to relax when there’s a pile of laundry waiting to be folded or dirty dishes in the sink take care of those things first. Getting rid of any distractions will allow you to enjoy your time guilt-free.
Next, light some candles or turn on your Essential Oil Diffuser with your favorite scents. Aromatherapy is beneficial and can set the mood for a relaxing experience. My favorite calming oil includes a blend of ylang-ylang, cedarwood, and grand fir.
Finally, play your favorite tunes or even listen to a podcast or sermon. I usually choose spa radio or classical jazz music on Apple Music to set a peaceful environment and create the ultimate spa experience at home.
Step 4. Pour a drink
Pour a glass of whatever beverage you choose. Green tea, a healthy smoothie, or even a glass of wine. My favorite relaxing drink of choice is a hot cup of rooibos tea with honey and milk.
Step 5. Draw a bath
Now that you have your drink of choice in hand, your candles lit and your nail kit, bathrobe, and towel next to the tub, fill it. Add 1 cup of Epsom salts, 1/3c baking soda, and a few drops of Essential Oils to the warm bath water for a luxurious experience.
I use Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salts. They offer different options like Epsom Salts with vitamin C, melatonin, coconut oil, or lavender. I’ve tried and loved each of them, but my favorite is the one with coconut oil for its beachy scent and, skin-nourishing properties.
As far as Essential Oils, I most often add Thieves oil from Young Living because of the healing and immune-boosting properties, plus that scent is amazing. However, there are a variety of calming oils to add to bath water like lavender, ylang-ylang, valor, and vetiver to name a few.
Soak in the bath for at least 30 minutes to absorb the magnesium from the salts. From time to time, take deep relaxing breaths to enjoy the scent and benefits of the oils you chose. Once I’ve soaked for a while I use my nail kit to give myself a manicure, and pedicure. Lastly, I wash my hair, face, and body.
At the end remember to shower and wash the olive oil out of your hair. It may take a few rounds of shampooing to get all of the oil out, but I promise, it’s worth it.
Step 6. Give yourself a facial
Once you’ve spent enough time in the tub, wrap up in your fluffy robe and get ready to enjoy more skin pampering with a facial.
My latest obsession and your next step to create the ultimate spa day at home is microneedling. You may use a Dr. Pen like I have or a derma roller or stamp to help make micro channels in your skin so that your favorite serums penetrate. For more information on how to microneedle and the serums that I use, read my post about microneedling at home. I’ve also listed some of the products that I use below.
Step 7. Face mask and red light therapy
One of my favorite indulgences and something I do several times per week, is to apply a face mask and sit under my high-powered infrared light for 10-30 minutes.
In my quest to take better care of my skin, I’ve been loving trying different face sheet masks. I’ve found several that have made a difference in the hydration, brightening, and overall appearance of my skin. I will list them below for you to try.
I love sitting under my near-infrared lamp while wearing a face sheet mask. The warmth from the light is relaxing and the infrared penetrates deep into the tissues improving circulation, and reducing inflammation. I’ll add a link to the light that I use down below as well as the red light mask that my friend uses for a similar effect.
Step 8. Mani-pedi time
The final step in creating your ultimate spa day at home is to polish those nails. Leave this step for last to decrease your chance of smudging. Put on your favorite rom-com and paint your nails in your favorite color.
Voila! These are the 8 steps I use to create the ultimate spa day at home without breaking the bank!
