Discover Hidden Gems on Hilton Head Island

For the past 20 years, Hilton Head Island has been our family’s ultimate summer getaway. With only a few missed years, this island has become a cornerstone of our family tradition. I genuinely feel a little lost when we can’t make it because Hilton Head offers so much more than just beautiful beaches. It’s a place where memories are made, bikes are ridden, and laughter fills the air.

If you’re planning your first trip or returning for another visit, here’s everything you need to know to enjoy Hilton Head like a local.

Where to Stay on Hilton Head Island: Our Top Picks

We’ve stayed all over Hilton Head… from rental homes and AirBnBs to condos, but these are our favorite neighborhoods:

Brigantine Quarters Logo

Brigantine Quarters at Shipyard Plantation

A quiet, quaint complex featuring two pools, tennis courts, and a private beach entrance. It’s perfect for families looking to relax away from crowds. (Heads up: no pets allowed.)

60 Ocean Breeze

Ocean Breeze & Xanadu Villas

Located near Coligny Circle and the beach, these condos offer easy access to shops, restaurants, and bike paths. Walking or biking to Coligny Plaza is a breeze here.

Why Renting Bikes is a Must on Hilton Head

Hilton Head Bicycle Co

Biking is one of our favorite ways to explore the island. Hilton Head has extensive bike paths that make it safe and fun for the whole family. We rent bikes every year and use them to get to the beach, restaurants, and shops. Just be aware of heavier traffic during the summer months. HHI Bicycle Co.

Beyond the Beach: Fun Family Activities on Hilton Head

There’s more to Hilton Head than sand and sea. Here are some of our favorite non-beach activities:

  • Kayak Hilton Head: Paddle through marshes and spot wildlife.
  • Dolphin Cruise: Get up close to dolphins with Mermaid of Hilton Head.
  • Coastal Discovery Museum: Explore nature trails and interactive exhibits.
  • Legendary Golf Mini Golf: Christian-themed mini golf with scripture at each hole. Fun for all ages!

Worship on the Island

Central Church Hilton Head

If you want to attend a Sunday service, Central Church is a welcoming, non-denominational option.

Evening Entertainment: Shelter Cove and Sea Pines

Entertainment on Hilton Head Island
  • Shelter Cove Towne Centre: Shopping, restaurants, fireworks once a week, and free outdoor movie nights.
  • Harbor Town Lighthouse (Sea Pines Plantation): Family-friendly shops, dining, and a scenic lighthouse. * A small entrance fee is required.

Our Go-To Restaurants on Hilton Head Island

Food is a huge part of the Hilton Head experience. Here are our family favorites:

Where to Start Your Day: Best Breakfast & Brunch Spots on Hilton Head

  • Java Burrito: Our top pick and the place we eat at the most, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They serve the best coffee on the island alongside an incredible menu of burritos, bowls, and fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The vibe is upbeat and modern, and everything is made to order.
  • Nectar Farm Kitchen:  They serve up the best brunch on the island. Locally sourced ingredients, hearty Southern comfort dishes, and an absolutely charming vibe… don’t skip the biscuits!
  • Sweet Al’s Café: A hidden gem for incredible pastries, muffins, and coffee. Even better? They source their beans from Hilton Head Island Roasters, so every cup supports local. Perfect for a quiet breakfast or mid-morning treat before a beach day.
  • Duck Donuts: These made-to-order donuts are a vacation tradition for us. Choose your own icing and topping combos—the maple bacon is a must! It’s especially fun to ride bikes there in the morning.
  • Alljoy Donut Co. (Bluffton): A must-stop for a sweet treat on your way off the island. Located in Bluffton, it’s the perfect farewell indulgence before heading home. Think classic donuts with fun, elevated flavors in a charming little spot.

Favorite Dinner Spots on Hilton Head (From Casual to Coastal Fine Dining)

  • Captain Woody’s Seafood Bar: This casual seafood spot has a fun, laid-back atmosphere and a great selection of local fish dishes. It’s not as charming as the original location, but it’s still a family favorite and great for relaxing after a day at the beach.
  • One Hot Mama’s American Grill: If you’re craving BBQ, wings, or hearty comfort food, One Hot Mama’s hits the spot. It’s perfect for families and offers generous portions, a lively vibe, and fast service.
  • The Sea Shack: Don’t let the no-frills exterior fool you, this spot is a local legend. Expect long lines in the early evening, but the fried seafood platters and hush puppies make it totally worth the wait.
  • Skull Creek Boathouse: This waterfront gem offers great food and even better views. It’s super kid-friendly, has plenty of outdoor seating, and the sunset over the bay is unforgettable.
  • Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks: Located right next to Skull Creek, Hudson’s is a little more upscale but just as scenic. Their seafood is fresh and beautifully prepared, and the water views make it ideal for a special night out.
  • Poseidon at Shelter Cove: A stylish, modern spot perfect for happy hour or dinner with a view. Their seafood is consistently great, and the rooftop bar is a fun place to catch the sunset or enjoy live music.

  • Nunzio Restaurant + Bar: Perfect for a fine dining Italian experience. Romantic ambiance, exceptional wine list, and truly memorable meals.
  • The Salty Dog Café: It isn’t just a meal, it’s a full family experience. The food is decent, but the real magic is in the atmosphere. It’s a bustling spot with fun shops, live events, and kid-friendly activities to keep everyone entertained while you wait.

Sweet Treats & Cool Eats: Our Favorite Dessert Stops on Hilton Head

  • Nonna Marie’s Gelato & Coffee Bar: Our newest discovery of 2025! Nonna Marie’s has amazing artisan gelato and the best affogatos we’ve had outside of Italy!
  • The Frozen Moo: It’s a must-do treat, especially after a beach day or in the evening. We love riding our bikes there at night! It’s the perfect post-dinner adventure. Don’t let the long line scare you… it moves fast, and the ice cream is worth it. With over 90 flavors, there’s something for everyone.

Highly Rated Fine Dining (Still on Our List to Try!)

Hilton Head Island's Fine Dining

These two restaurants come up constantly in Hilton Head Facebook groups and travel forums when people ask for top-notch dining. We haven’t been yet, but the reviews speak for themselves… both get consistent 5-star feedback for food, service, and atmosphere. If you’re looking to splurge on a special night out, these are the top two that locals and visitors alike rave about:

  • Charlie’s Coastal Bistro (formerly Charlie’s L’Étoile Verte): A white-tablecloth French-inspired coastal bistro with fresh, locally caught fish and a seasonally changing menu. Known for exceptional service, beautifully plated dishes, and an upscale yet cozy setting. Pricey, but everyone says it’s worth every penny.
  • The Sage Room: They offers an intimate, chef-driven dining experience with creative dishes and an open kitchen concept. It’s perfect for foodies who appreciate bold flavor pairings, extensive wine options, and elevated ambiance. Reservations recommended!

Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • Book your stay early, especially in peak summer months.
  • Pack layers for cool indoor air conditioning.
  • Bring a wagon for hauling beach gear and snacks.
