As we enter the new year, we’re greeted with an opportunity to reflect, realign, and set intentions that guide our lives toward what truly matters. A sermon I recently heard about the preciousness of time has deeply inspired me, and I hope it inspires you, too. It wasn’t about the length of our lives, which we have little control over, but about stewarding the margins within each day. The preacher used a profound illustration that brought this concept to life: the jar of rocks, pebbles, and sand. Let’s unpack this principle and how it can transform your time management and goal-setting approach.
The Jar of Life
Imagine you have a jar and need to fill it with large rocks, pebbles, and sand. If you start with the sand and then add the pebbles, there’s no room for the large stones. But if you prioritize placing the large rocks first, the pebbles and sand naturally settle into the gaps. The large stones symbolize the non-negotiables—the pillars of importance—that must come first in your life. The pebbles are the smaller priorities, and the sand represents the countless minor details and distractions that fill our days.
What are these “large rocks”? The preacher identified five foundational pillars inspired by Jesus’ example:
- Time with God
- Time with Family
- Time for Work (Occupation)
- Time for Vocation (Mission, Ministry, or Your Giftings)
- Time for Health
Let’s dive into these pillars and consider how to protect and prioritize them in our daily lives.

Time with God
Your relationship with God is the cornerstone of everything else. Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray, reflecting His priority of communion with the Father. Carving out time for prayer, worship, and studying the Word creates a foundation of peace and wisdom. When you start your day with God, you invite Him to direct your steps, fill your heart with purpose, and equip you to handle whatever comes your way.
This year, consider setting aside intentional moments with God. Whether it’s a quiet morning devotional, a prayer walk, or simply pausing throughout your day to acknowledge His presence, make it your first large rock.

Time with Family
Our families are often our greatest earthly blessings, yet they can also be the most neglected when our schedules overflow. Jesus demonstrated the importance of relationships through His care for His disciples and His mother, even during His final moments on the cross. Investing time in your family nurtures love, trust, and connection.
Prioritize family dinners, one-on-one conversations, and meaningful traditions. This year, you could plan weekly game nights, regular date nights with your spouse, or intentional time with your children to pour into their lives.
Time for Work (Occupation)
Work is a gift from God that provides for our needs and enables us to contribute to society. Jesus worked as a carpenter before His ministry, demonstrating the value of honest labor. However, work can easily consume our lives if we’re not careful. Guarding your time at work means being productive and focused during work hours while ensuring it doesn’t encroach on other priorities.
Set boundaries around your work schedule. Avoid bringing work home whenever possible, and resist the urge to overcommit. Remember, work is important, but it’s not your entire identity.
Time for Vocation (Mission, Ministry, or Your Giftings)
We have unique talents and callings that God has given us. Whether you serve in your church, volunteer in your community, or pursue creative projects that glorify God, your vocation reflects your God-given purpose.
Make space to pursue what fuels your spirit. This might mean saying “no” to things that don’t align with your calling so you can say “yes” to the things that matter most. Consider dedicating time each week to growing your gifts and serving others.
Time for Health
Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and caring for it is an act of worship. Jesus valued rest and nourishment; He encouraged His disciples to take time away to recharge. Prioritizing your health ensures you have the energy and stamina to fulfill your God-given responsibilities.
This year, commit to caring for your body through regular exercise, nutritious meals, adequate sleep, and stress management. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant improvements in your overall well-being.

Lessons from Warren Buffett and Bill Gates
The preacher also shared a powerful video featuring Bill Gates and Warren Buffett discussing the value of time. Buffett, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, stated that while he can buy almost anything, he cannot buy more time. He showed his nearly empty calendar, emphasizing the importance of leaving space for reflection, planning, and personal growth.
This approach challenges the modern tendency to overbook ourselves. Social media and the “fear of missing out” (FOMO) often drive us to fill every moment with activity. However, as Buffett’s example illustrates, intentionally leaving room in our schedules can make us more effective and fulfilled.
The Danger of Overcommitment
When we overcommit, we risk neglecting our health and relationships. Constant busyness leads to burnout, weakened connections, and diminished joy. Saying “no” can feel challenging, but it’s essential for protecting your time.
Reflect on your current commitments. Are they aligned with your priorities? If not, consider letting go of tasks or activities that don’t serve your more significant purpose. Remember, every “yes” is a “no” to something else.

Setting Intentional Goals for the New Year
This new year is a chance to realign your goals with the principle of protecting your time. Here are some practical steps to help you:
- Identify Your Large Rocks: Write down your non-negotiables based on the five pillars.
- Evaluate Your Schedule: Look at how you currently spend your time. Are your priorities reflected?
- Set Boundaries: Establish clear limits around your time to prevent overcommitment.
- Create Margin: Leave space in your day for rest, reflection, and unexpected opportunities.
- Practice Gratitude: Celebrate the time you have and use it wisely.
