By Kelly Letalien | Diary of a Self-Help Addict
Read about my experience with the injectable peptide, SS-31. Let me take you back. It was one of those chilly winter days when you’re googling longevity hacks like a mad scientist, comparing PubMed tabs, sipping matcha, and trying to decode what the mitochondria actually do (besides being the “powerhouse of the cell,” thanks, 7th-grade biology).
I had been researching peptides for almost a year at that point. A full year. Twelve whole months of deep-diving into acronyms that sound like secret agents (looking at you, BPC-157 and CJC-1295), wondering if I was going to biohack my way to superhuman – or spontaneously combust trying.
But analysis paralysis is real. I was drowning in studies and Reddit threads and thought, Maybe I’ll just stick with collagen and hope for the best.
Enter: my sister. The second-born, action-taking, “clicks first and asks questions later” type. I told her about all the mitochondrial peptides I’d been obsessing over, including BPC 157, TB-500, Ipamorelin, SS-31, and MOTS-c, among others. She listened politely for all of five minutes, did a quick 30-minute Google session, and called me back with, “Let’s start with SS-31 and MOTS-c. Order them now.”
Just like that. Boom. Injectables inbound. No turning back.

Why We Chose SS-31 First
Let’s be real: fixing your mitochondria is like cleaning your gutters. It’s not sexy. You won’t feel an instant glow or drop a pant size overnight, but your house – aka your body – runs a whole lot better.
SS-31, also known as Elamipretide, is the kind of peptide that doesn’t need a spotlight to shine. It does its magic in the background, silently repairing the little energy factories inside your cells so they can go from Motel 6 to Ritz Carlton.
Our thinking was simple:
First, repair the mitochondria (SS-31). Then, make them function better (MOTS-c).
That’s the mitochondrial maintenance combo we chose, like a detox or tune-up for your engine.

So What Exactly Is SS-31?
SS-31 is a small bioregulator peptide (tetrapeptide, for the nerds) made up of just four amino acids: D-Arg-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH2. It’s designed to target the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds to a phospholipid called cardiolipin – a key player in maintaining mitochondrial integrity. Basically, it’s like a BFF that holds your mitochondria together when times get tough.
It was developed by researchers trying to slow down age-related mitochondrial decline and is now used in some functional medicine and research settings, especially for:
- Age-related diseases
- Heart failure
- Kidney damage
- Retinal diseases
It’s not FDA-approved (yet), but it has shown promise in animal and early human studies. That’s why biohackers and forward-thinking practitioners have taken a mitochondrial leap of faith.
How Does SS-31 Work?
Let me break it down without sounding like a textbook:
- Protects mitochondria from oxidative stress (a.k.a. rust of the cells)
- Improves energy production (ATP)
- Reduces inflammation at the cellular level
- Supports better function in aging tissues, including the heart and brain
- Improves insulin sensitivity and may support metabolic flexibility
In short? It helps your cells work smarter, not harder. And when your cells are happy, you’re happy.

My Sister’s Unexpected Proof
Now, my sister is healthy. Like…kale-smoothie-while-doing-yoga-on-a-Bosu healthy. Still, she was expecting to feel a difference from a mitochondria peptide.
She said, “I don’t feel any different,” and I told her, “You’re not supposed to. It’s not caffeine. It’s cellular repair.”
Fast-forward a few days later… the call:
“Okay, it’s working. I have proof.”
She uses a metabolic tracking device called Lumen, which analyzes her breath and provides a breakdown of whether she’s burning carbs or fat. For 6–7 months, Lumen had never mentioned anything about mitochondria.
Suddenly, after starting SS-31, Lumen tells her:
“Mitochondrial health is important. Yours is doing well.”
Cue the jaw drop. That had never popped up before.
Even more surprising? For the first time in months, she woke up in fat-burning mode without changing her already squeaky-clean diet. Same foods, same exercise. The only new variable? SS-31.

My SS-31 Ritual (and Annual Reset)
Since that first round of SS-31 magic, I’ve done what I call my Mito Reset Stack every January:
- SS-31 (to repair mitochondria)
- MOTS-c (to improve mitochondrial function)
- Epitalon (for longevity and pineal support – see blog post!)
I like to think of it as cellular spring cleaning. Out with the old, oxidative gunk. In with energy, resilience, and long-term vitality.
I’ve done this combo for two years in a row now, and it’s become a January ritual I plan to keep for life.
How to Use SS-31
Let’s discuss the details, but please remember that this is not medical advice. Always work with a healthcare provider, especially when experimenting with research peptides.
- Route: Subcutaneous injection (a tiny pinch under the skin into the fatty layer)
- Typical Dosage: 2–5mg/day, depending on your goals and tolerance
- Frequency: Some do 5 days on, 2 days off for 4 weeks. Others use it for 10–30 days straight as a “cycle.”
- Timing: Many take it in the morning to support daytime mitochondrial activity. It’s recommended to take peptides while fasting when possible.
Note: This is a water-soluble peptide that requires reconstitution with bacteriostatic water. Store in the fridge. Do NOT mix with anything else in the same syringe.

How I Personally Use SS-31 (and You Should Talk to Your Practitioner!)
There are lots of suggested dosing protocols out there, but here’s what I personally do, and it’s worked well for me:
10mg injected subcutaneously, 3 days a week, for a total of 9 doses over 3 weeks.
That’s it. I did this in January as part of my mitochondrial reset stack (with MOTS-c and Epitalon), and it felt like the perfect cellular jumpstart after the holidays. Some people prefer lower doses daily or different cycling methods… so again, this isn’t medical advice. This is just what works for me and my biohacking, overthinking, mitochondria-loving body.
Whatever route you go, please make sure you’re:
- Consulting with a knowledgeable health practitioner
- Using a reputable supplier (source below)
- Reading all COAs (Certificates of Analysis) before injecting anything into your beautiful self
Is SS-31 Safe?
To date, SS-31 has demonstrated an excellent safety profile in both animal and early human studies. However, it’s still in the research phase and not FDA-approved.
Contraindications/Cautions:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (don’t even go there)
- Anyone on immune-suppressing medications or with a cancer history (mitochondria and growth pathways are tricky—talk to your doc)
- If you’re sensitive to injections or unfamiliar with reconstitution, please don’t DIY it. Work with a peptide-trained practitioner.

Where I Buy Mine (and How to Vet a Supplier)
Let me be clear: not all peptide suppliers are created equal. This is your body we’re talking about – don’t cheap out or grab something random off TikTok.
I order mine from AC Peptides, and I only do so after checking the COA (Certificate of Analysis) for each batch.
Here’s my referral link for a discount on your first order: 👉 AC Peptides
Make sure you:
- Only order peptides with independent lab testing.
- Store them properly. (powder = freezer, reconstituted = fridge)
- Avoid mixing brands within a stack.
Kelly’s Thoughts
If you’re someone who’s obsessed with health, longevity, and feeling great for decades to come, SS-31 is a quiet but powerful ally. You won’t feel it hitting you like an energy drink, but give it time, and your cells will thank you.
Whether you’re recovering from burnout, prepping for a longevity reset, or just curious about what the mitochondria whisper to your Lumen device… SS-31 might just be your secret weapon.
Just remember: it’s not about instant results. It’s about building a better foundation for the long haul.
And if your sister tells you to order something? Maybe just listen. 😂
Want to hear how MOTS-c worked for us next? Comment below! Stay tuned for my future post, where I talk about metabolic upgrades, fat-burning modes, and the peptide that turned my mitochondria into little Olympians.
Until then, keep glowing from the inside out. ✨
Xoxo,
Kelly
