delicious crockpot hot chocolate recipe here

There’s nothing quite like a warm mug of creamy, decadent hot chocolate to bring people together. Over the years, I’ve perfected a crockpot hot chocolate recipe that has become a staple at my special gatherings. Whether it’s a cozy holiday evening, a family movie night, or just a chilly weekend treat, this hot chocolate always gets rave reviews from friends and family. Today, I’m thrilled to share my go-to recipe with you!

Why Crockpot Hot Chocolate?

Making hot chocolate in a crockpot is a game-changer. It’s easy, low-maintenance, and perfect for serving a crowd. Plus, the slow cooking process ensures all the flavors meld beautifully, creating a rich and velvety drink miles ahead of anything made from a mix. Once you try it, you’ll never go back!

Ingredients for Crockpot Hot Chocolate

Here’s what you’ll need to make the magic happen:

  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 6 cups whole milk (divided)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving)
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon and a pinch or two of Redmond’s Real Salt
  • For a large crowd, I add an extra cup of whole milk and 2-3 Tbsp of Ghirardelli hot chocolate powder for extra creaminess.

This combination of ingredients creates a perfectly balanced hot chocolate that is creamy, chocolaty, and perfectly sweet enough.

Instructions: How to Make Crockpot Hot Chocolate

Step 1: Prepare the Cocoa Mixture

In a microwave-safe bowl or cup, heat 1 cup of milk to scalding—but not boiling. (You can also do this on the stovetop if you prefer.) Whisk in the cocoa powder once the milk is hot until smooth and thoroughly combined. This step ensures the cocoa dissolves completely and prevents lumps.

Step 2: Combine the Ingredients in the Crockpot

In a 4-quart or larger slow cooker, add the sweetened condensed milk, remaining whole milk, heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Then, stir in the cocoa mixture you made earlier. If you’re using the optional cinnamon and salt, add them now.

Step 3: Cook on Low

Cover the crockpot and set it to low. Cook for about two hours, stirring often as the mixture warms up. Stirring is essential to help the chocolate chips melt evenly and avoid clumps at the bottom.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

Once the chocolate chips have completely melted and the mixture is warm, it’s ready to serve. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs and top with mini marshmallows, whipped cream, or a candy cane for a festive touch.

Flavor Variations to Try

One of the best things about this recipe is how versatile it is. Here are a few ways to mix it up:

  • Peppermint Hot Chocolate: Swap the vanilla extract for peppermint extract to create a refreshing, minty twist.
  • Adult Hot Chocolate: Stir in a splash of Kahlúa, Peppermint Schnapps, or RumChata for a boozy treat.
  • Spiced Hot Chocolate: Add a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne pepper for a Mexican hot chocolate vibe.

Tips for the Perfect Crockpot Hot Chocolate

  1. Use High-Quality Ingredients: The better your cocoa powder and chocolate chips, the richer your hot chocolate will taste.
  2. Don’t Skip the Stirring: Regularly stirring is crucial to ensure the chocolate melts evenly and doesn’t scorch.
  3. Keep It Warm: Once ready, switch your crockpot to the warm setting so guests can enjoy a refill whenever they like.
  4. Serve with a Toppings Bar: Lay out an assortment of toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles, crushed peppermint, and chocolate shavings for a DIY hot chocolate bar.

Why My Family and Friends Love It

This recipe has become a tradition in my home because it’s more than just a drink; it’s an experience. From the rich aroma that fills the house as it cooks to the delight on everyone’s faces as they sip, this hot chocolate brings a sense of warmth and joy. My friends often joke that they’d come to my parties for the hot chocolate alone!

Perfect Pairings for Hot Chocolate

To elevate your hot chocolate experience, pair it with:

  • Cookies: Chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, or gingerbread cookies are excellent choices.
  • Pastries: Croissants, cinnamon rolls, or scones complement the richness of the hot chocolate.
  • Savory Snacks: Balance the sweetness with a salty snack like popcorn or a charcuterie board.
