Fall is here, and with it comes cooler air, cozy sweaters, and… unfortunately, cold and flu season. If you want to give your immune system extra support during these months, stocking your natural medicine cabinet with the right supplements can make a huge difference.
Today, I’m sharing the five supplements I always keep on hand in the fall, plus a couple of bonus remedies I keep in my fridge. These natural supports can help you stay strong, recover faster, and feel your best all season long. Additionally, I’ll provide you with links to the exact products I use.

1. Quercetin – Your Immune System Ally
Quercetin is one of my go-to supplements for fall because it’s a powerhouse flavonoid (a plant compound) with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. Found naturally in onions, apples, and green tea, quercetin helps modulate your immune system and may even block viruses from entering cells.
Benefits of Quercetin:
- Supports a healthy immune response
- Reduces seasonal allergy symptoms
- Fights oxidative stress and inflammation
- May help reduce viral replication
How to Take:
I usually take quercetin daily as a preventative measure, especially during cold and flu season. For added immune support, it pairs well with vitamin C and zinc.
Potential Risks or Side Effects:
Quercetin is generally considered safe, but it can interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners and antibiotics. Large doses may cause headaches or digestive upset in some people. If you have thyroid issues, consult your doctor before taking Quercetin.
2. Zinc – My Secret “Shock Therapy” for Colds
When I feel something coming on (a scratchy throat, runny nose, or low energy), zinc is my go-to emergency remedy. I personally use this liquid zinc because it doesn’t make me nauseous like tablets sometimes do.
Here’s my personal trick: I do what is known as “zinc shock therapy.” I take two dropperfuls into the back of my throat, hold it there for one minute, then swallow. I repeat every two hours when I feel like I’m fighting something off, and I can honestly say it’s helped me ward off many colds before they really take hold.
Benefits of Zinc:
- Essential for healthy immune function
- Helps shorten the duration of colds
- Aids in wound healing and skin repair
- Supports hormone balance
How to Take:
Zinc should not be taken daily unless prescribed by a doctor. But when you’re under the weather, short-term higher doses may be beneficial (always consult your healthcare provider).
Potential Risks or Side Effects:
Excessive zinc intake can lead to nausea, diarrhea, and copper deficiency over time. Don’t exceed recommended doses or take them long-term.
3. Vitamin D3 + K2 – The Sunshine Vitamin Duo
During fall and winter, most of us aren’t getting enough sunlight to produce adequate vitamin D. That’s why I supplement with Vitamin D3 + K2. These two work better together; D3 supports calcium absorption, while K2 directs calcium to the right places (bones and teeth, not arteries).
Benefits of Vitamin D3/K2:
- Boosts immune system resilience
- Supports strong bones and teeth
- May improve mood and energy levels
- Helps reduce inflammation
How to Take:
I take this daily with a meal that has some healthy fat (since vitamin D is fat-soluble). Consistency is key to maintaining good blood levels.
Magnesium Tip:
One important thing to note is that vitamin D can deplete magnesium, which is why I recommend taking a magnesium supplement as well. [Magnesium citrate or glycinate] are gentle, well-absorbed options that can support relaxation, sleep, and muscle function.
Potential Risks or Side Effects:
Taking too much vitamin D can lead to calcium buildup, which is why pairing it with K2 is crucial. Always check your vitamin D blood levels once or twice a year.

4. Oil of Oregano – Nature’s Antibiotic
Oil of oregano is an herbal supplement I never go without in the fall. It has been used for centuries for its antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. This “natural antibiotic” is my go-to when I need extra support for sore throats, colds, or digestive upsets.
Benefits of Oil of Oregano:
- Potent antiviral and antibacterial properties
- Can shorten colds and respiratory infections
- Supports gut health by balancing microbes
- Natural antioxidant support
How to Take:
You can take it in capsule form or diluted liquid drops. I usually use it short-term when I feel sick, not every day.
Potential Risks or Side Effects:
Oregano oil is very strong. It can cause burning if taken straight. Always dilute if using liquid drops. Avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have certain health conditions (like bleeding disorders).
5. Colostrum – Gut & Immune Strengthener
This might sound unusual, but Colostrum is one of the best immune-supporting supplements out there. Colostrum is the nutrient-rich first milk produced by mammals after giving birth. It contains antibodies, growth factors, and compounds that support the immune system.
Benefits of Colostrum:
- Strengthens gut lining and reduces leaky gut
- Provides immune-boosting antibodies
- Supports muscle recovery and repair
- May reduce the severity of respiratory infections
How to Take:
I like taking colostrum powder or capsules daily when I feel an illness coming on to support my immune and gut health.
Potential Risks or Side Effects:
Generally safe, but avoid if you have a dairy allergy or severe lactose intolerance.
Bonus: Elderberry Syrup & Fire Cider in the Fridge
In addition to my supplement cabinet, I always keep two homemade remedies stocked in my fridge:
- Elderberry Syrup: Rich in antioxidants and shown to help reduce the duration and severity of colds and flu.
- Fire Cider: A spicy, immune-boosting vinegar tonic made with garlic, ginger, onions, and citrus. Perfect for warming up and fending off seasonal bugs.
These DIY remedies are not only effective but also empowering, as they allow you to know exactly what’s going into your body.
