In this blog post, I’ll share my easy elderberry syrup recipe, along with the health benefits of its ingredients, tips for making and storing it, and how to incorporate it into your daily routine. As the seasons change, so does our exposure to different viruses and allergens. Whether you’re looking to bolster your immune system during cold and flu season or seeking relief from seasonal allergies, elderberry syrup is a powerful natural remedy that can help.

Why Elderberries?

Elderberries have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. They are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that provide numerous health benefits:

  1. Immune Support: Elderberries are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids, which help boost the immune system.
  2. Cold and Flu Relief: Studies have shown that elderberry syrup can reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: Elderberries have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce symptoms of seasonal allergies.
  4. Antioxidant-rich: They are high in antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and support overall health.

Ingredients and Supplies for Elderberry Syrup

To make this potent elderberry syrup, you’ll need the following:

  • 4 cups of dried organic elderberries or 8 cups fresh elderberries
  • Organic ginger root (about 2-3 inches, peeled and sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon of cloves (whole dried or ground powder)
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon (ground or sticks)
  • 1 star anise (Optional)
  • 8 cups of water
  • 16-24 ounces of honey (honey is best for immunity, though you could substitute with agave or maple syrup)
  • 1/2 cup of vodka (Optional: acts as a preservative)
  • Cheesecloth or a nut milk bag to strain the berries
  • Air-tight glass storage containers for the finished elderberry syrup

How to Make Elderberry Syrup

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Gather all your ingredients. If you’re using fresh ginger, peel and slice it. Measure out the elderberries, cloves, cinnamon, and honey.
  2. Combine and Simmer: In a large pot, combine the elderberries, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and star anise (if using) with the water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour, or until the liquid has reduced by half.
  3. Strain the Mixture: Once the mixture has reduced, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. Using cheesecloth or a nut milk bag, strain the liquid into a large bowl, pressing on the berries to extract as much juice as possible.
  4. Add Honey: Allow the liquid to cool to lukewarm temperature (this helps preserve the beneficial properties of the honey). Stir in the honey until it is fully dissolved. If you’re using vodka, add it at this stage as well.
  5. Store the Syrup: Pour the elderberry syrup into air-tight glass storage containers and store them in the refrigerator. The syrup can last up to three months in the fridge or six months if you’ve added vodka.

Health Benefits of the Ingredients

Each ingredient in this elderberry syrup recipe contributes to its powerful health benefits:

  • Elderberries: Packed with vitamins A, B, and C, elderberries are known for their immune-boosting properties.
  • Ginger: Contains gingerol, which has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
  • Cloves: High in antioxidants and have antibacterial properties.
  • Honey: Rich in antioxidants and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Cinnamon: Contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial effects.
  • Star Anise (optional): Known for its antiviral properties, especially effective against the flu virus.

Tips for Making and Storing Elderberry Syrup

  1. Quality Ingredients: Always use high-quality, organic ingredients to ensure you get the most health benefits from your elderberry syrup.
  2. Storage: Store your syrup in the refrigerator in air-tight glass containers. If you prefer a longer shelf life, adding vodka can act as a natural preservative.
  3. Dosage: For adults, a typical dosage is 1 tablespoon per day for immune support, or 1 tablespoon every 2-3 hours if you’re experiencing cold or flu symptoms. For children, reduce the dosage to 1 teaspoon.

Incorporating Elderberry Syrup into Your Daily Routine

Elderberry syrup is not only a potent remedy but also a delicious addition to your daily diet. Here are some ways to incorporate it:

  1. As a Daily Supplement: Take a spoonful of elderberry syrup daily to support your immune system.
  2. In Beverages: Add a spoonful to your tea, smoothie, or sparkling water for a flavorful boost.
  3. Over Pancakes or Waffles: Use it as a syrup alternative for a nutritious and tasty topping.
  4. In Recipes: Incorporate elderberry syrup into your recipes for added flavor and health benefits.

Final Thoughts

Making your own elderberry syrup is an easy and rewarding process. Not only do you get to control the quality of the ingredients, but you also create a potent natural remedy that can support your health throughout the year. Whether you’re looking to boost your immune system during cold and flu season or seeking relief from seasonal allergies, this elderberry syrup recipe is a wonderful addition to your health regimen.

Remember, while elderberry syrup is a great natural remedy, it’s always important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.

So grateful for this! I’ve been wondering how to make elderberry syrup for a long time. We use enough elderberry products that I may need to plant my own bushes. We will be making this all the time!
