A Little Blog Takeover (and Why Puerto Rico Is Now on My Radar)
Every once in a while, I get completely pulled into a place through someone else’s experience; that’s exactly what happened when my sister and her two boys traveled to Puerto Rico over Christmas break.
They flew into San Juan (easy, direct travel from Boston), and settled into a great hotel (she’ll tell you—most of the higher-end options there do not disappoint). They spent most of their days exactly how you’d expect: toes in the sand, ocean air, no rush. But it was one particular excursion—just outside the usual tourist bubble—that completely stole their hearts.
When she sent me what she wrote about that day, I knew immediately I wanted to share it with you. It sounds incredible, but even more it captures something I love about travel when it’s done right. As she’ll describe… slowing down, connecting with locals, learning the story of the land, and having an experience that feels meaningful—not manufactured.
So today, I’m turning the blog over to my sister for a moment. If you love travel, nature, adventure, or you’ve been curious about Puerto Rico as a destination beyond the beach (though the beaches are reason enough 😉)…. I think you’ll really love this.
Here’s her story about a rainforest, a family, and an unforgettable day in Puerto Rico.
An Unforgettable Rainforest Adventure on Family Land in Puerto Rico
Written By Allison Towne.
Some adventures are thrilling. Others are beautiful. And then there are the rare ones that feel deeply personal—the kind that connect you not only to nature, but to the people who call it home. This zipline, waterfall climbing, and rappelling adventure near Caguas, Puerto Rico, is one of those experiences.
Just 45 minutes south of San Juan, we found ourselves in a lush rainforest near the Carite Forest Reserve, welcomed not by strangers, but by our hosts, Diego and Sally. From the very beginning, it was clear this wasn’t just a tour—it was an invitation into their world.
A Rainforest That Tells a Family Story
What makes this adventure truly special is that it takes place on Sally’s family land—property that has been cared for and loved for generations. As we hiked deeper into the rainforest, that connection could be felt in every step. This land isn’t just scenic; it’s alive with history, tradition, and pride.
Surrounded by towering trees and rushing water, the forest is home to an incredible variety of wildlife: 49 species of birds, 15 species of amphibians (including the beloved Coquí), 12 species of reptiles, 7 species of mammals, and more than 200 species of trees. Along the way, Diego and Sally shared stories, offering insight into both the ecosystem and their family’s deep relationship with the land.

Adventure With Heart
The day was filled with unforgettable moments:
- Hiking and climbing upriver through the rainforest using secured ropes
- Rappelling 80 feet down the stunning El Salto waterfall, descending into a canyon carved by time and water
- Soaring across three different ziplines with breathtaking views of the forest and river below
- Cooling off in crystal-clear river pools and waterfalls—a peaceful reward after the adrenaline rush
Every activity felt elevated by the fact that we were experiencing it alongside people who genuinely love and respect this place.
A Deeper Connection to Puerto Rico
As we approached the site, we passed through the region of Caguas, once home to some of Puerto Rico’s most important sugarcane plantations. This area has provided work for thousands of Puerto Ricans. Remnants of those fields are still visible as you climb into a mountain range rising nearly 2,000 feet above sea level.
The name Caguas comes from the Taíno chief Caguax, who shared knowledge of tobacco farming and local harvests with Spanish settlers. Long before colonization, this land was home to the Taíno people, and that deep respect for nature still resonates today.
Ending the Day Like Family
Just when you think the experience couldn’t get better, the adventure ends in the most Puerto Rican way possible—with food and family.
After the tour, Diego and Sally brought us to Sally’s grandmother’s home, where we were treated to a delicious homemade lunch. Sitting at her table, sharing stories, laughter, and authentic Puerto Rican cooking, we realized this final moment was just as meaningful as the ziplines and waterfalls. We were no longer just guests—we were part of the story.
More Than an Adventure
This is more than a zipline or waterfall rappelling tour. It’s a chance to experience Puerto Rico through the eyes of a local family, to explore a land filled with history, and to leave with memories that go far beyond photos.
If you’re looking for an adventure that feeds your soul as much as your sense of thrill, this is one you’ll never forget.

Kelly’s Thoughts
What I love most about this story—and why I wanted to share it here—is that it perfectly captures the kind of travel that stays with you long after you unpack your bags. Yes, Puerto Rico offers stunning beaches, beautiful resorts, and easy travel from the mainland, but experiences like this are what truly deepen your connection to a place.
If you’ve been curious about Puerto Rico as a destination, let this be your reminder that sometimes the most meaningful moments happen just a short drive away from where you’re staying—when you say yes to something local, personal, and a little adventurous. These are the trips we’ve been talking about for years. And this one? It’s officially on my list.
