If you’ve been craving a mountain getaway that isn’t overcrowded, overly commercialized, or a full day’s drive away, let me introduce you to our newest family obsession: Brevard, North Carolina.

Nicknamed the “Land of Waterfalls,” Brevard sits at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, just 3½ hours from Atlanta and about 35–45 minutes southwest of Asheville. (Close enough for convenience, yet it somehow feels like you’ve stumbled upon a secret mountain town that not everyone knows about.)

We spent a long weekend there this July, and honestly? It exceeded every expectation.

Between hiking to gorgeous waterfalls, relaxing on our cabin deck, wandering through the charming downtown, enjoying incredible food, listening to live music, and bringing our dog Finley almost everywhere with us, this quickly became one of our favorite weekend trips we’ve taken.

In fact…

We loved it so much that we were already talking about coming back before we even packed the car.

And yes…we may have even joked about retiring there someday. (Although I’d definitely need to experience one winter first before making that commitment! 😂)

Why Visit Brevard?

Sometimes the best vacations aren’t packed with nonstop activities. They’re the ones where you slow down. Brevard has that feeling.

The pace is relaxed. The people are friendly. The air feels cooler. The mountains surround you in every direction. And waterfalls seem to appear around every bend in the road.

Even though we visited in July, it never felt unbearably hot. Compared to Atlanta, the temperatures were absolutely perfect for hiking and spending time outdoors.

If you love nature but also appreciate cute coffee shops, local restaurants, boutique shopping, and live music in the evenings, Brevard offers the best of both worlds.

Where We Stayed: Pilot Cove

One of the biggest reasons our trip felt so relaxing was where we stayed.

We booked a cabin at Pilot Cove, located right at the base of Pisgah National Forest.

I honestly couldn’t have picked a better place.

The cabins are modern but cozy, incredibly clean, and nestled into the mountains so you truly feel surrounded by nature. Our back deck overlooked the trees and mountains, making it the perfect place to enjoy coffee each morning.

One of my favorite surprises? They even provided a hammock to hang on the deck. It’s one of those little touches that makes you actually slow down for a while.

The cabins also came stocked with everything we needed, making it easy to cook if we wanted or simply relax after a long day of hiking.

If you’re looking for a peaceful home base while exploring Brevard, I would absolutely stay here again.

Waterfall Chasing in the Land of Waterfalls

Brevard isn’t called the Land of Waterfalls for nothing.

There are over 250 waterfalls in Transylvania County, which means you could visit multiple times and still have plenty left to explore.

We managed to visit several during our long weekend. Each one had its own personality.

Looking Glass Falls

If you’re looking for maximum beauty with minimal effort, this is it. Looking Glass Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in North Carolina—and for good reason.

It’s located right off the road, making it incredibly easy to access. Within minutes of parking, you’re standing in front of an absolutely stunning waterfall cascading down the rocks.

If you’re traveling with kids, older adults, or anyone who doesn’t want a strenuous hike, this stop is a must. It also makes a perfect first waterfall to kick off your trip.

Moore Cove Falls

This ended up being one of my favorite experiences of the trip.

The hike is approximately 1.5 miles round-trip, leading to a breathtaking 50-foot waterfall that you can actually walk behind.

Yes… Behind the waterfall. Pictures simply don’t do it justice. Many hiking websites classify this trail as “easy” or “beginner.”

Personally? I’d call it moderate. There are quite a few steps and some uphill sections that definitely get your heart rate up. It’s certainly doable for most people, but don’t expect a completely flat walk through the woods.

The reward at the end is absolutely worth every step.

And our pup, Finley? She loved every second of it. The trail was dog-friendly, shaded, and perfect for energetic pups.

Sliding Rock

If you’ve never heard of Sliding Rock, it’s exactly what it sounds like. A natural rock waterslide carved into the mountain over thousands of years.

People actually slide down the smooth rock into the chilly mountain water below.

Even if you don’t plan to slide yourself, it’s fun to stop and watch. Watching families laugh, kids scream with excitement, and brave adults plunge into freezing water is entertainment all by itself.

John Rock Trail

While my daughter and I enjoyed exploring downtown Brevard, my husband tackled the John Rock Trail.

This hike takes approximately 2–3 hours and is considered intermediate in difficulty (but, he said it was felt more advanced😅).

The payoff? Spectacular panoramic mountain views.

He came back tired, but completely convinced it was worth every mile. If you enjoy longer hikes with rewarding overlooks, definitely add John Rock to your itinerary.

Downtown Brevard Is Pure Small-Town Charm

One thing I loved most about Brevard was how walkable and welcoming downtown feels. It’s filled with local boutiques, coffee shops, bookstores, art galleries, and restaurants.

Instead of rushing from place to place, people actually stroll. You’ll see families. Dogs. Cyclists. Musicians. Everyone just seems…happy.

It reminded me why I love visiting smaller mountain towns. They encourage you to slow down.

And Yes…It’s Extremely Dog Friendly

If you travel with your dog as we do, you’ll appreciate this. Finley was welcomed almost everywhere. Many restaurants have outdoor patios. People smiled at her. She loved exploring downtown just as much as the hiking trails.

It’s always nice when you don’t feel like your dog is an inconvenience while traveling. Brevard definitely earns high marks for being pet-friendly.

Our Favorite Places to Eat

One of the pleasant surprises of the trip was how much we loved the local restaurants. Every place we visited had its own personality.

Cup & Saucer

Our favorite breakfast stop. Great coffee. Delicious breakfast- try the biscuits and gravy! Friendly service. Exactly what you want before heading out for a morning hike.

Canto 34

Whether you’re a coffee lover or a chai tea fan (like me), this is worth visiting. It’s cozy, relaxing, and the perfect afternoon pick-me-up.

Fable

We stopped here for lunch and absolutely loved it… Probably the best BLT I’ve ever had.

Fresh food. Creative menu. Great atmosphere. It quickly became one of our favorite meals of the trip.

Pisgah Bakehouse

Dinner here was fantastic. We enjoyed their specialty peach pizza- delish!

Everything tasted homemade, comforting, and exactly what we wanted after spending hours hiking. Mountain towns just seem to know how to do cozy food well.

185 King Street

One of our favorite evenings. Live music. Relaxed atmosphere. Good food. Happy people. Our dog, Finley, even enjoyed hanging out while we listened to music.

Those are the moments that make vacations memorable.

A Hidden Cultural Surprise

After spending our days hiking waterfalls and exploring the mountains, we stumbled upon another unexpected gem.

The Brevard Music Center.

This internationally recognized music conservatory hosts students from around the world during the summer.

One of the highlights is its beautiful covered outdoor amphitheater, where you can enjoy symphonies, orchestras, opera, jazz, and other performances surrounded by the mountains.

It felt like the perfect balance to our outdoor adventures. Nature during the day. Music under the stars at night. Not many small mountain towns offer both experiences so beautifully.

A Few Helpful Tips Before You Go

Here are a few things we learned that may help you plan your trip.

Plan dinner early.

Many restaurants close earlier than you might expect—especially on Sundays.

If you’re used to eating at 8:00 or 9:00 p.m., you’ll probably be disappointed. Most places wind down much earlier.

Bring bug spray.

If you’re planning to hike (which you absolutely should), don’t forget insect repellent.

The wooded trails are beautiful, but mosquitoes and other bugs definitely make appearances during the summer months.

Wear good hiking shoes.

Some waterfall trails involve roots, rocks, steps, and muddy sections.

Comfortable hiking shoes make a huge difference.

Pack layers.

Even during July, mornings and evenings felt noticeably cooler than Atlanta.

A light sweatshirt came in handy.

Don’t over-schedule yourself.

One of Brevard’s biggest charms is simply slowing down.

Leave time to wander downtown. Grab another coffee. Sit on your cabin deck. Swing in the hammock. Watch the sunset.

Sometimes the best memories happen when you’re not rushing to the next attraction.

Why We’ll Definitely Be Back

Every once in a while, you visit a place that simply feels right.

Brevard was that place for us.

It wasn’t flashy, wasn’t crowded, and it didn’t try too hard.

It simply offered beautiful mountains, incredible waterfalls, friendly people, delicious food, dog-friendly adventures, and the chance to truly unplug for a few days.

Those are the kinds of vacations that stay with you.

As we drove home, we were already talking about which waterfalls we’d hike next time, which restaurants we’d revisit, and how we’d love to spend even longer exploring Pisgah National Forest.

Who knows…

Maybe one day we’ll even retire there.

Although before I make that decision, I’d better visit during the winter first. This Georgia girl isn’t completely convinced she’s ready for mountain snow just yet! 😉
