I love making food from scratch. Homemade sauerkraut, overnight oats, sourdough bread, a big pot of chickpea curry… give me some good ingredients and a little time in the kitchen, and I’m happy.
But I also like making things easier on myself. Especially when it’s almost dinner time, and I’m hungry enough to start eating the ingredients before they make it into the recipe. Anyone else?
With Amazon’s fall Prime shopping event beginning today, this is a good time to share some kitchen finds that fit the way I cook: practical things for preparing meals, storing leftovers, and making those little homemade extras I enjoy so much.
I’m saving my bigger “favorite purchases of the year” roundup for Black Friday. Today, we’re spending a little time in the kitchen.

Glass Jars for Overnight Oats and Homemade Goodness
There’s something very satisfying about opening the refrigerator and seeing breakfast already waiting for you.
My overnight oats recipe starts with one simple base, and then you can change up the flavors depending on what sounds good. Blueberry lemon one day, chocolate peanut butter another. That’s my kind of meal prep.
Jars with a wide opening make it easier to add ingredients, stir everything together, and actually reach the bottom with your spoon. I also like being able to see what’s inside without opening every container in the refrigerator.
Before buying a set, think about the portion you usually make. A jar that looks adorable in the listing might be a little too small once you add oats, liquid, fruit, and all the good stuff on top.
And if you already have jars that work, use those! Breakfast doesn’t need matching containers to taste good.

A Kitchen Scale for Homemade Sauerkraut
I don’t pull out a scale for everything I make, but sauerkraut is one exception.
My method is to put the bowl on the scale, zero it out, add the chopped cabbage, and weigh it in grams. Then I calculate the salt at 2% of the cabbage weight.
For example, 800 grams of cabbage gets 16 grams of salt. That’s much easier than estimating how much cabbage I’ve packed into a measuring cup.
I’d look for a scale with an easy-to-read display, a grams setting, and a simple tare button. I’d also check that the weighing capacity can handle the bowl plus the cabbage.
This is a good example of a small kitchen tool with a very specific job. I don’t need it to do twelve other things. I need it to help me measure my cabbage and salt!

Fermentation Lids for Sauerkraut
Once you’ve salted, massaged, and packed the cabbage into the jar, it’s time to wait.
I prefer a lid designed to let fermentation gases escape because it makes that part of the process easier. If you’ve read my sauerkraut post, you know I also save an outer cabbage leaf to help keep the shredded cabbage beneath the brine.
When choosing lids, check that they fit your jars. Regular-mouth and wide-mouth sizes aren’t interchangeable, and discovering that after you’ve packed a jar full of cabbage is not my idea of a fun afternoon.
Follow the instructions for the specific lid you buy, too. Different designs work differently.
If you’re interested in making sauerkraut, my full post walks through the recipe and process. The lid is only one part of the setup.

Glass Containers for Leftovers and Meal Prep
I love a meal that feeds us tonight and gives us something delicious for lunch tomorrow.
Chickpea curry, roasted vegetables, extra rice, chopped ingredients for dinner… having containers ready makes it easier to put everything away and find it again.
For a set of glass containers, I’d focus on the sizes rather than just the number of pieces. A collection of tiny containers may not help if you’re usually storing a generous serving of dinner.
Look at the lids, too. Are they easy to clean? Can you buy replacements? Will the containers fit comfortably in your refrigerator?
Check the manufacturer’s directions for freezer, microwave, dishwasher, and oven use. The container and lid may have different instructions.

A Little Electric Whisk for My Homemade Coffee Treat
You know I love a glorious cup of coffee.
My usual coffee is pretty simple, but when pumpkin spice season rolls around, I like making a little treat at home. I mix pumpkin puree, maple syrup, heavy cream, and a dash of pumpkin spice, whisk it, and add hot coffee.
Delish.
That little electric whisk helps bring the ingredients together without pulling out a bigger appliance. It’s the sort of small tool that earns its place when you have a regular use for it.
If you’re shopping for one, check whether it uses replaceable batteries or recharges (I prefer battery-powered because it’s stronger), and read the cleaning instructions. I’d also look for something comfortable to hold and easy to store.
Fancy coffee-shop feels, right in my own kitchen. I’m happy with that.

A Few Useful Tools for Cooking From Scratch
Before adding another appliance to my kitchen, I like to think about what I’ll actually make with it.
A food processor could be useful for someone who regularly makes homemade dips, veggie burgers, or desserts. An immersion blender could make sense for someone who makes a lot of blended soups. But the best choice depends on your recipes, your counter space, and what you already own.
The tool I use most frequently in my kitchen… my Vitamix blender. I make smoothies, dips, salad dressings, soups, creamy desserts, and even muffins. Having a high-speed blender has been a game-changer for us.
A couple of recipes to try using your high-speed blender:

Sourdough Supplies for the Home Baker
If you’ve caught the sourdough bug, you understand how easy it is to start looking at all the baking accessories.
Before filling the cart, I’d start with the steps you find awkward. Is handling sticky dough the frustrating part? Storing your starter? Getting the loaf into the baking vessel?
A useful purchase should make one of those jobs easier. It doesn’t need to turn your kitchen into a professional bakery.
And if you’re buying a larger piece, like a Dutch oven or bread oven, think about its size, weight, and where you’ll keep it. Something can look wonderful online and still be a pain to lift or store in your kitchen.

Here’s a starter kit with the tools I use and love for baking sourdough bread: Sourdough Proofing Basket Gift Set.

If you don’t have a sourdough starter, you can buy one here: San Francisco Sourdough Starter Culture (or get some from a friend).

What I’d Check Before Buying
My favorite question to ask during a sale is: will I use this next week?
If I can picture it helping with breakfast, dinner, or a recipe I already make, that’s a good start. If I’m inventing a whole new lifestyle to justify it, I need to think about it a little longer. Ha!
Check the size, care instructions, current price, and return policy. For something expensive, compare the same model at another retailer before checking out.
You don’t need everything on this list. You might only need a replacement lid or a scale for that sauerkraut you’ve been wanting to try.
Let’s Make Something Good
One of my favorite things about cooking at home is knowing what goes into the food I’m making for my family. A few useful tools can make the chopping, mixing, storing, and cleanup easier, which helps me keep doing it.
I hope this gives you some ideas for your own kitchen, whether you’re making overnight oats for the first time or already have a sourdough starter taking up residence on the counter.
What kitchen tool do you use all the time? Tell me in the comments. I love hearing what other people find useful!
